We did it! Cici and I just got back from a successful first flight and vacation to Florida to visit my dad and I wanted to share our experience with you.
The thought of travelling with kids usually gives people the sweats…unless you’re my sister who has flown a bazillion times by herself with TWO kids from Australia to Canada…that’s a 24 hour flight people!!!! I decided to ease into the whole travelling with a baby thing with a less than 3 hour flight, but I will eventually be flying to Australia with Cici so I’m glad we got her on an airplane sooner than later.
Just like most things in life, if you plan and are organized the experience will probably be positive and enjoyable. I’ve always loved packing for trips and I think I’m getting pretty good at it, but of course it takes practice and a lot of failed attempts. I was always guilty of overpacking and then in an attempt to not over pack I would under pack and be stuck somewhere with zero options which drove me nuts!
Packing for a child is a whole new challenge so instead of making it easy on myself, I decided to add to that challenge and NOT get a checked bag. We weren’t going for too long so I figured I could get away with what Spirit calls a Personal Item and a diaper bag. I also brought my Ergo 360 carrier, full size stroller and car seat and I’m SO glad I did! My mind set was to purchase what we needed and couldn’t pack (diapers, sunscreen, baby food, etc). Well, we were able to pack what we needed in the two bags and it really wasn’t too difficult! The only reason why I might get a checked bag next time is because hauling two bags when you’re flying solo with a baby is challenging. You’re good up until you have to board the plane, because you have to ditch your stroller and lug your baby and your two bags down a narrow aisle. Thankfully this time around my girlfriend and her 2.5 year old daughter came with us, and we were able to help each other out.
When I packed the two bags I chose to pack all of our clothes and other things we didn’t need access to in one bag and I used her diaper bag to hold all the things we needed to keep in close reach, like her snacks, diapers, wipes, blanket, toys etc. That system seemed to work but I wish I had used a backpack instead of her actual diaper bag. I couldn’t close the diaper bag so after I rummaged through it a few times it was just a mess.
Clothes I packed for me
- 5 pairs of undies
- sports bra
- bathing suit
- 3 pairs of shorts (only wore 2)
- pyjama leggings (didn’t end up wearing)
- 1 dress (didn’t end up wearing)
- 2 tank tops
- 3 t-shirts
- flip flops
Clothes I packed for Cici
- 4 pairs of shorts
- 4 tops
- bathing suit
- 3 sleepers
- 3 summer rompers
- jelly shoes
- sun hat
Cici spent most of her days slathered in sunscreen and in just a onesie so I could have packed even less but I’m definitely happy with what I did pack for her.
Things I did right
- packed coordinating outfits – which meant I didn’t over pack
- packed a bunch of snacks for Cici (puffs, yogurt melts, mum mum’s)
- loaded Frozen on my iPad (she loves Let it Go- does anyone know how to save music videos onto your iPad?)
- brought a few of her favourite + portable books and toys
- brought her soother clip (definitely a MUST!!!)
- packed her white noise machine – napped and slept like an angel once we arrived
- did NOT check our carseats – brought to the gate and left with our strollers (saved us having to wait at baggage claim).
- only packed enough diapers to get us through the day until we could buy some
Basically anything to occupy and entertain your little one will make your trip a lot smoother- snacks, toys, music, movies – bring a variety!
Things I would do differently next time
- use a backpack
- pack mum mum crackers in a plastic container (no joke…nothing sucks more than crushed mum mum’s)
- maybe check one bag (or split on one if I travel with my girlfriend again)
- bring myself snacks (which i usually do but I think I forgot because I was so concerned with packing enough snacks for Cici)
I think the more you travel the better you get at it, so I guess we just need to keep going on vacation! Every trip is different too, I certainly couldn’t have gone without a checked bag if we were travelling somewhere cold…bulky clothes take up so much more room. Yet another reason why warm destinations are my favourite. The first time travelling with a child is always full of anxiety because you just have no idea how they’re going to react or behave. Now that we’ve experienced one flight and Cici did so well, it makes me have more confidence for future flights + travelling in general.
We had such a great mini vacation and it was SO nice seeing my dad and all his friends. We did a lot of swimming, ventured out to do a little bit of shopping, enjoyed a lot of ice cream and wine and stayed up way too late every night talking about anything and everything!
I’m so happy to report that our first flight and vacation with Cici was a positive experience. She adapted quickly to vacation life and loved all the fresh air, daily swims, sun + not having to wear socks! If you have any travel tips let me know, I’d love to hear them!
Happy Thursday friends! xo
